NERC Increases Electricity Charges

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), yesterday, formally announced an increase in monthly electricity fixed charge component from N500 to N700.

Although some distribution companies have started its implementation well before now, thus eliciting general outcry from electricity consumers, NERC stated it was formally announcing the increase with a view to putting things in proper perspective.

The Chairman of NERC, Dr. Sam Amadi, admitted that the changes just noticed by consumers had earlier been announced by the commission as far back as June 1, 2012, noting that the Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO) is the stipulated tariffs for a five-year period from June 1 to May 31, 2017, based on the expected cost of generating, transmitting and distributing electricity to homes and businesses during the period under review.

Amadi said: “This means that the tariff order issued to every distribution company has an approved tariff for 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016, except there is a minor review of the MYTO, which takes place semi-annually, with results announced on December 1 and June 1, each year. Each distribution company is authorized to collect only the approved tariff announced by NERC.”

He stressed that the total tariff paid by all consumers in Nigeria comprised a single monthly fixed charge and a variable energy charge, which was based on consumption.
