Leading telecoms service provider, MTN Nigeria
Communications Limited, is to pay a fine of N90m for poor quality of service
for the period July to December, the Nigerian Communications Commission said on
Friday.
Director of Public Affairs at NCC, Mr. Tony Ojobo,
said this in Abuja on Friday while announcing the postponement of planned
takeoff of mobile number portability by three weeks.
Number portability is an application that will
enable subscribers to migrate from one service provider to another without
losing their numbers.
The service is expected to put network operators on
their toes in offering good quality of service at very competitive tariffs.
Ojobo said during the drive test conducted round the
country in December by NCC, MTN failed to meet the Key Performance Indices that
it had established for operators.
Consequently, he added, it had been communicated to
the operator that it has till April 3 to pay the fine of N90m for the poor
quality of service on its network.
However, General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Mrs.
Funmi Omogbenigun, did not respond to enquiries from our correspondent.
On number portability, Ojobo said the service which
was earlier scheduled to take off on March 25 had to be put off because mobile
operators requested for three more weeks to test their systems.
He said the postponement also became necessary to
enable the regulatory agency to sensitise Nigerians on how to port their
numbers from one network to another
